Stainless steel types 304 and 304L. Type 304 is the most versatile and widely used stainless steel. It is also known as 18/8 from the nominal composition of type 304 being 18% chromium and 8% nickel.

The most versatile and widely applied of the 300 series Stainless Steels. It has excellent forming and welding characteristics. AISI 304 stainless can be deep drawn more severely than Types 301 and 302 without immediate heat softening, a characteristic that has made this grade dominant in the manufacture of drawn stainless steel parts such as sinks, splashbacks and saucepans.

Type 304 stainless steel also has outstanding welding characteristics. Post-weld annealing is not required to restore the excellent performance of this grade in a wide range of mildly corrosive conditions.

Type 304L does not require post-weld annealing and finds extensive use in heavy gauge components where freedom from carbide weld precipitation is often required.

• All Stainless Steel Flat Bar is available in lengths of up to 4 meter or can be cut to lenghts of less than 4 meters.
• All Flat Bar comes in a Hot Rolled Annealed and Pickles finish. It is a 2B Mill type finish.
• We offer stainless steel flat bar in two finishes, hot rolled annealed and pickled (HRAP) and slit rolled edge (SRE). Hot rolled annealed and pickled finished stainless steel flat bar goes through quite a process. First it is rolled on a hot strip mill (hot rolled).
• Producing slit rolled edge stainless steel flat bar is particularly a specialist service provided by Midway Metals using our slit rolled edge flat bar machine. The machine flattens, straightens, edges and cuts stainless steel flat bar in any width from 20 to 200mm. The biggest benefits for our customers are that we can now produce stainless steel flat bar faster than ever, and that we can provide lengths from 2-6 metres as the customer requires.
• Stainless steel flat bar is divided into two primary groups – true flat bar and sheared and edged bar. True flat bar is usually in the HRAP condition, though it may sometimes be cold drawn. This bar has fairly sharp corners and tighter tolerances on thickness and width than sheared and edged, and is often used by fabricators where the finished project is polished. Sheared and edged material is cut from plate, and then put through a process which straightens the bars and cleans up the edges. This is a much more cost effective way to buy a flat bar when corner sharpness and tolerances aren’t critical. The standard lengths of true bar are 12’-14’ random lengths, while sheared and edged bars typically come in 12′ dead lengths.

• There are three main methods of manufacturing tubing that lend their names to tubing classifications.
• Seamless steel tubes are produced through extrusion. Extruded tubes can be formed in a hot or cold process. Long sections of steel bar are forced through a die that blocks out the intended shape of the tube.
• This method involves passing a rolled sheet of steel through two weld rollers. The weld rollers have a groove around their circumference, through which the steel roll passes. There is a contact at the roll seam that transmits electricity at a high enough current to weld the seam closed. The resulting weld is very small. Drawn-over-mandrel (DOM). A mandrel is a small piece of metal inserted into the tube to define a shape. It gives the tube extra support to prevent unwanted wrinkling during drawing. The tube is passed through a die that has a smaller diameter than the current tube size. As the tube is drawn, it shrinks to match the size of the die’s diameter. This process allows for tight tolerances and specifications. Each of these manufacturing processes allows manufacturers the ability to form varying tube shapes and sizes. Tubes are not always cylindrical, and can be made in triangle, square or other polygonal shapes. Steel tubes destined for certain applications require extra processes as well. Applications involving hydrogen must be factory pre-cleaned or certified as instrument grade due to hydrogen’s reactive characteristics that can cause metal embrittlement or even explosions. Generally, a steel tube manufacturing process is chosen for its interaction with the type of steel to be used. Certain types of steel react poorly to heat because of carbon content, so they can’t be easily welded. Steel types also play a role in decisions regarding use in volatile applications.

• Steel tubing is used in high numbers in plumbing applications. The reasons are threefold. One, stainless steel is very sturdy, composed of 80-90 percent steel and 10-20 percent chromium. Steel tubing can handle the types of pressures exerted by water upon plumbing structures. Additionally, the surface of stainless steel does not allow for much adherence by particles or bacteria, so purification processes will not pass on unintended detritus. Finally, steel does not contaminate drinking water.
• Steel tubes are also used in a wide variety of structural applications, such as industrial and residential construction. Examples include fences, gates, railings, playground and athletic equipment. Steel is often used for construction tubes over other metals like aluminum when extra stress resistance is necessary.
