Weldable and self-aging aluminium alloy (RDE-40) has been developed for use in light-weight structures. This alloy has shown better stress corrosion resistance than the other alloys in Al-Zn-Mg
group. It gives an ultimate tensile strength of 40 kg/sq mm. This alloy is useful for Defence (particularly in the field of aerospace), railways and transportation. The technology has been transferred to industry.Aluminum Plate
can be used in various applications due to unbeatable strength to weight ratio compared to other metals. Weighing in at 1/3 as much as Iron, steel, copper or brass, aluminum is the most abundant metal element in Earth's crust and makes up about 8% by weight.
The present study is concerned with the effect of welding processes on the mechanical properties of the RDE-40 aluminium alloy, closely confirming with the AA7039 (Al-Zn-Mg) alloy. The frequently preferred welding processes for this alloy are Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) due to their comparatively easier applicability and better economy. In this alloy, the weld fusion zones typically exhibit coarse columnar grains because of the prevailing thermal conditions during weld metal solidification. This often results in inferior weld mechanical properties and poor resistance to hot cracking. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is an innovative solid-phase welding technique that was developed primarily for welding metals and alloys that heretofore have been difficult to weld using more traditional fusion techniques. In the present work, the tensile properties, microhardness, microstructure and fracture surface morphology of the GMAW, GTAW and FSW joints are evaluated and results are compared. From this investigation, it is found that the FSW joints of the RDE-40 aluminium alloy shows superior mechanical properties compared with the GTAW and GMAW joints and this is mainly due to the formation of a very fine, equiaxed microstructure in the weld zone.

Aluminium alloy 6082 is a medium strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys.
Alloy 6082 is known as a structural alloy. In plate form, 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining. As a relatively new alloy, the higher strength of 6082 has seen it replace 6061 in many applications. The addition of a large amount of manganese controls the grain structure which in turn results in a stronger alloy. It is difficult to produce thin-walled, complicated extrusion shapes in alloy 6082. The extruded surface finish is not as smooth as other similar strength alloys in the 6000 series. 6082 is typically used in Highly stressed applications, Trusses, Bridges, Cranes, Transport applications, Beer_ barrels, Milk churns.
7075 is the highest strength aluminum plate. Can be used in air-frame structures and aircraft parts. Some end uses for all grades of aluminum include transportation, food packaging, furniture, electrical applications, building, construction, machinery, and equipment.
